Kids Yoga Classes: What to expect by age

If you’ve typed “kids yoga classes near me” into a search bar, you’re probably looking for something specific: a way to help your child feel calmer, more confident, or simply move their body in a way that feels good. Kids yoga can be all of that, and it looks very different at 6 weeks, 3 years, and 13 years old. Here’s what to expect at each stage, so you can find a class that fits your family.

What is kids yoga?

Kids yoga isn’t about perfect poses or being flexible. It’s play, movement, and breath, plus learning to notice what’s happening inside. Classes use stories, songs, games, and simple poses to help children recognize their emotions and build calmness, patience, and confidence.

Baby yoga (6 weeks and up)

Baby yoga is a class for you and your little one together. Expect gentle movement, songs, eye contact, and touch, which support bonding and give you time to connect with other caregivers. Babies might nap, nurse, or fuss during class, and that’s completely normal. If your baby has any medical concerns, check with your pediatrician before starting.

Toddler and preschool yoga

Little kids have short attention spans, so classes are short bursts of play: animal poses, songs, stories, movement games, and simple breathing like “smell the flower, blow out the candle.” The goal is body awareness, listening, and having fun together. Don’t expect your toddler to stay on a mat the whole time. Wandering is part of the process.

Yoga for elementary-age kids (grades 1 to 5)

School-age kids are ready for a little more structure. Classes add more poses, partner games, breathing tools, and practice naming feelings and focusing. These are the skills kids can carry into the classroom, onto the playground, and into the car ride home.

Yoga for tweens and teens (grades 6 to 12)

Older kids carry a lot: schedules, school pressure, and social stress. Yoga offers a space with no competition and no grades, plus breathing and movement tools they can use to reset before a test, a game, or a tough conversation.

How to choose the right kids yoga class

  • Match the class to your child’s age. A class built for toddlers will feel very different from one for teens.

  • Look for playful, not perfect. The best kids classes feel like fun, not a performance.

  • Check the instructor’s experience with children. Teaching kids is its own skill.

  • Consider caregiver involvement. Some ages do best with a grown-up on the mat.

  • Try a class. The best test is whether your child leaves feeling good.

What to bring

Comfortable clothes that are easy to move in, a water bottle, and an open mind. No yoga experience is needed.
